While a great approach to solving problems, esp in manufacturing, TOC (Theory of Constraints) lacks a well-documented base of experience. Most other manufacturing methodologies (Lean, Six Sigma, TQM) have extensive case-study material. But, it seems that while much is being done with TOC, no one has centralized this highly valuable material that could re-invigorate American manufacturing. MRP is the core support application for manufacturing - once the production schedule has been created, MRP lets everyone know what's on-hand and what's needed. It does the vast quantity of look-ups and calculations needed to properly provision the production line. MRP is difficult, more so when being utilized in a TOC production environment, so an authoritative book on MRP in a TOC environment is very valuable. This is the bible ...
This is the bible of materials planning. It is not a quick how-to book that one can read in a week and be an expert. It can however serve as an in depth handbook for reference. While it starts with the very basics of inventory management it does require some background knowledge in materials management to get the best from the text. Orlicky's is one of the top 5 books that should be in the professional operations manager's library.
Well done! This book is going to bring alignment to the Operational Excellence (LSS) Team and Supply Chain with its understanding of what MRP is suppose to do and what it is capable of doing, BUT realizes change was needed from the traditional way of MRP thinking to adapt to a more dynamic business environment. My schooling and career has exposed me to MRP but wouldn't call myself a true supporter of it, I find myself very often getting push back on trying to eliminate the need to forecast and let it be the driving force behind our business decisions, such as scheduling and inventory control. I have more of a Lean Six Sigma background, and have been waiting for something like this to come along for a long time! Welcome DDMRP!!!Chad and Carol do an excellence job of explaining how MRP came to be what it is today and why the change is needed with great explanation and examples.I would recommend this book to anyone from Supply Chain, Finance, and Operation functions as well as a Lean/TOC function to help seek to understand how there is a win/win for the entire enterprise.
Perfect. I use it as a specification for an MRP system i have to develop. It also a very good help to understand the logic behind SAP/MM-PP even though it does not even mentions any concrete MRP software. It is definitively the best book in my technical library. Not a quick read though ( one chapter per day.. Maybe feasible.. It took me more than a month to read it completely) but I love the way authors detail every aspect of the mrp topic including many key areas in manufacturing. Every sentence... Even every word is very important. No wasted pages or unneccessary blabla.Since I like to highlight important sentences with liquid fluorescent ink (as seen in the attached photo) I am also pleased with the quality of the paper.
To get to the conclusion first this is a must-read for all practitioners of supply chain management using MRP / ERP systems. The title is very understated - this is much more than Orlicky's MRP. This is a major update of MRP methodology, recognizing and addressing its key weaknesses as well as its strengths, incorporating Lean and TOC concepts into an integrated system. Considering this is essentially a business book with lots of technical information I nonetheless found it a good and interesting read - it's very well-written.Some concepts have been around for a while, but some of the analyses have typically been done on Excel spreadsheets or other applications separate from the ERP system. Chad Smith and Carol Ptak integrate all these concepts and methodologies into one system which provides the user with a great deal of information synthesized into applications that make decision making much easier and considerably less tedious using traffic light concepts for inventory status, here defined as zones. The concepts of strategic buffers and actively synchronized replenishment are the core of their methodology and these concepts are where Lean and TOC meet MRP to integrate the best parts of each. Again, MUCH more than Orlicky's MRP and an essential read - great work Carol and Chad.
For sure, the book opens a door to the future of operations and supply chain management. As usual, these advancements seem obvious and common sense once you read them. The new concepts introduced by Ptak and Smith are really valuable and sounded. This is a powerful way of running operations driven by demand, a real pull system with new insights on how to run operations in over offered markets, including old concepts from MRP and the more recent from TOC and Lean, achieving the two main KPI of operations: close to 100% DDP with the lowest possible inventory along with high visibility and focused management.
Carol and Chad, in the 3rd edition of Orlicky's well know text on material planning, are providing us with the Quantum Leap we have been looking for in providing us with tools to support our VUCA world (volatile/Uncertain/Complex and Ambiguous).Every company needs to take this seriously if they want to be out in front of their competitors. Buy the book, take the web based course and get certified CDDP (Certified Demand Driven Planner) and lets start making a difference out there when it comes to materials planning in the supply chain.
Very good book for everybody interested in Material requirement planning. Covers information on most of the functionalities the current ERP / APS systems offer. Very enjoyable reading.
